Manufacturing

Built in 2011, in Windsor, Quebec, Canada, CelluForce’s manufacturing facility is the first of its kind in the world. The plant has a production capacity of 300 tonnes of Cellulose NanoCrystals (CNC) per year.

Process

The process begins with wood pulp produced from FSC certified sources as a raw material. The pulp undergoes a reaction process that removes the amorphous components, leaving high purity cellulose crystals intact. These crystals are then separated, cleaned and dried to form a powder material for shipment. CelluForce recycles the chemicals used in the production process, and converts sugars into energy, for reuse in the system.

Our patented technology allows the final spray-dried product to be easily dispersed at the end user location, leading to significant savings in the cost of storage and transportation. Depending on the application requirements, various product grades are available.

The CelluForce plant uses state of the art equipment and has rigid internal procedures to ensure CNC is of the highest purity and of consistent quality to meet the customer demands. CNC can be used in high end applications such as electronics. CelluForce is also a participant in the international standardization efforts being conducted by the ISO/TC 6/TG 1 Cellulosic Nanomaterials task group.

Packaging

CelluForce NCCTM is the only CNC that can be shipped as a dry powder resulting in lower shipping cost. It can be packaged in various formats to accommodate customer requirements.

Intellectual Property

Our Intellectual Property covers a wide range of areas, from the manufacturing process to surface modifications and applications development. This IP base demonstrates our technical expertise and leadership in the CNC market. It is crucial for developing partnerships that lead to new uses for CNC.

CelluForce has access to a CNC patent portfolio of over 50 patent families, the world’s largest. This key know-how makes CelluForce a leader in the production of high purity CNC and its integration in new and existing applications.

R&D

CelluForce funds and continues research and development efforts on CNC fundamentals and future applications. Over the years, the company has established a network of experts, universities, colleges and independent labs that perform R&D to generate Intellectual Property to further expand the role of CNC in new markets.

CelluForce is continuously developing new applications to expand the use of CNC. CelluForce has a very open approach in developing new applications with potential customers. This can vary from a basic sample shipment to full joint development.

CelluForce applies the principles of concurrent product development: we design and develop our products by running different stages simultaneously, rather than consecutively. The decreased time to market and product development period lead to improved productivity and reduced costs.

Developing CNC applications requires a concerted effort with our collaborating partners. We draw on our technical expertise and knowledge to support our partners’ R&D and/or new product development teams. The result is a customized application that caters to the desired improvement to the customer’s product.
